Chicago marathon winner out of hospital

CHICAGO, Oct. 24 (UPI) -- Robert K. Cheruiyot was released from a Chicago hospital Tuesday, two days after his victory in the Chicago Marathon.

The Kenyan runner slipped on a decal and fell to the pavement just before crossing the finish line Sunday, causing a brain contusion, the Chicago Tribune reported. His body skidded forward, bringing his torso across the line so that he became the official victor by 5 seconds.

A victory celebration was scheduled for late Tuesday afternoon at the Chicago Hilton.

Carey Pinkowski, executive director of the La Salle Bank Chicago Marathon, said that Cheruiyot usually takes six weeks off after every marathon. He is thus not bothered by doctors' recommendations that he take six to eight weeks off.

''He's in good spirits," Pinkowski said. "I saw him this morning, and this is all just being precautionary. He was sitting in bed reading about himself in the papers. He wants to go back to the hotel."

Cheruiyot, a two-time winner of the Boston Marathon, is currently leader in world marathon standings.
