Report: NFL to suspend Merriman

SAN DIEGO, Oct. 23 (UPI) -- San Diego Chargers linebacker Shawne Merriman will be suspended for violating the NFL's substance abuse policy, the San Diego Union-Tribune reported.

ESPN reported the suspension was related to steroids. The newspaper, citing sources close to the linebacker, said Merriman would appeal the test results and said there is "a reason behind this." The Union-Tribune did not elaborate.

It is not known when the NFL would announce the suspension but if it came this week Merriman would be ineligible to play until the Chargers' game Nov. 26 against the Oakland Raiders.

Merriman was the NFL's defensive rookie of the year last season when he recorded 10 sacks. He has 5 1/2 sacks this season.
