John Bunting fired by UNC

CHAPEL HILL, N.C., Oct. 22 (UPI) -- John Bunting, the beleaguered football coach at North Carolina, will not return in 2007.

The school announced Sunday that he will continue to coach the Tar Heels through the rest of this season.

UNC's 23-0 loss at Virginia last Thursday night left boosters in an uproar.

"Changing coaches is never a pleasant experience, but it is even more difficult when you consider the character and integrity of someone like John Bunting," said North Carolina Athletic Director Dick Baddour. "He and his wife, Dawn, have given so much to the university."

Bunting is a North Carolina graduate and played professionally for the New Orleans Saints.

With four games left in the season, UNC has an overall record of 1-6, 0-4 in the ACC Coastal Division.

North Carolina's lone victory was 45-42 against I-AA Furman Sept. 16.
