Inquiry made into 1999 cricket World Cup

LONDON, Oct. 22 (UPI) -- Indian officials have sent an inquiry to London's Scotland Yard about the 1999 cricket World Cup which saw several players banned for taking bribes.

Indian police officials have asked the Yard for video footage from 1999 World Cup matches involving South Africa as well as all financial and telephone records for Hansie Cronje, the country's team cricket captain at the time, The Times of London reported.

Back in April 2000, Cronje admitted he had accepted bribes from gambling syndicates to throw World Cup matches and specific individuals' batting scores, the report said.

The inquiry is said to be focused on South Africa's game against India in the 1999 event, which India won, since Cronje and several of his players wore electronics equipment which may have allowed them to fix the match.

The Times said that just last week, Indian police questioned South Africa's 1999 starting batsman, Herschelle Gibbs, about the incident and learned that Cronje allegedly had approached his teammates regarding throwing a World Cup match.
