MADRID, Oct. 22 (UPI) -- World No. 1 Roger Federer Sunday won the Madrid Masters tennis tournament in Madrid.
In the final, the Swiss star topped Chile's Fernando Gonzalez, 7-5, 6-1, 6-0, to become first player in the Open era to win 10 tournaments in three straight seasons.
With his 19th straight match victory, Federer, who won $474,000, improved his record this season to 82-5. He won 81 matches in 2005.
Before Federer, the last player to win 80 matches in at least two straight years was Ivan Lendl.
"There's not much I can say about that," Federer said.
Federer won despite having to play through a right ankle injury. He rolled the ankle in the first set.
Federer edged past Pete Sampras (11) for second in career Masters Series titles. Andre Agassi is the all-time leader with 17 Masters Series titles.
Gonzalez was playing in his second final in the last two weeks.
He was the runner-up in last week's BA-CA Tennis Trophy in Vienna.
