Verlander, Reyes to be Game 1 starters

DETROIT, Oct. 20 (UPI) -- Detroit rookie right-hander Justin Verlander will be on the mound for the Tigers in Game 1 of the World Series Saturday against St. Louis.

The Tigers said the rotation after that will be Kenny Rogers, Nate Robertson and Jeremy Bonderman.

Verlander has gone 1-0, with a 5.91 ERA in the post-season. He was 17-9, with a 3.63 ERA in the regular season and was the winner when Detroit beat St. Louis, 10-6, June 24.

St. Louis Manager Tony La Russa named rookie right-hander Anthony Reyes as his starter.

In 17 regular-season starts, Reyes had a record of 5-8 with a 5.06 ERA.

Detroit Manager Jim Leyland said reliever Joel Zumaya will be healthy enough to pitch and first baseman Sean Casey also appeared ready to return from his calf injury.

There was no word on the 25-player roster, which must be finalized by Saturday morning. The game is set for 7:30 p.m. EDT.
