NEW YORK, Oct. 20 (UPI) -- Randy Marsh will head up the six-man crew of umpires for the World Series, which is set to begin Saturday in Detroit.

The St. Louis Cardinals defeated the New York Mets in Game 7 of the National League Championship Series to earn the right to face the American League-champion Tigers. It is a rematch of the 1968 World Series, won by Detroit in seven games.

Marsh, a 25-year Major League veteran, will be the home plate umpire for Game 1, and would rotate back behind the plate should the series go seven games, MLB said in a release Friday. It is his fifth World Series assignment. He was also the crew chief for the 2003 World Series.

The other umpires selected to work the series are Alfonso Marquez, Wally Bell, Mike Winters, John Hirschbeck and Tim McClelland.

McClelland is at his fourth World Series while Winters and Hirschbeck will each be in their second. It is the first World Series assignment for Marquez and Bell.
