3 share lead at Mallorca Classic

SON SERVERA, Spain, Oct. 19 (UPI) -- Niclas Fasth, Andrew McLardy and Gary Murphy each turned in 4-under-par 66s Thursday for the first-round lead at the Mallorca Classic in Spain.

All three leaders started their rounds on No. 10 and breezy conditions on the island made scoring tough.

But Fasth, from Sweden, was able to post consecutive birdies on Nos. 4, 5 and 6 to highlight his round. Murphy, from Ireland, birdied the first two holes of his round and he grabbed a share of the lead when he had a 2 on the par 3 eighth hole.

McLardy, from South Africa, posted a double bogey on No. 3, but rallied with birdies on Nos. 4, 5, 6 and 8 to pull to a share of the lead.

Four players -- Argentina's Ricardo Gonzalez and Englishmen Jonathan Lomas, Phillip Archer and Thom Whitehouse -- were tied for fourth at 2-under-par 68.

This is the fourth year for the Mallorca Classic, which continues through Sunday, and Spanish players have won each of the previous tournaments. The low Spanish player after one round was Jose Manuel Lara, tied for eighth at 1-under-par 69.
