NEW YORK, Oct. 18 (UPI) -- The New York Knicks will be without forward 6-foot-11 inch forward Jared Jeffries for six to eight weeks because of a fractured left wrist.
He was injured when he fell on the wrist during a pre-season contest against the New Jersey Nets last Friday.
An MRI revealed the fracture.
Jeffries signed a five-year, $30-million contract in the off-season and had been penciled in as the team's starting small forward. Before joining the Knicks, the former Indiana University product spent four seasons with the Washington Wizards.
"It's definitely a setback, but we can't let that be an excuse," Knicks president and coach Isiah Thomas told the New York Daily News Wednesday.
The Knicks may use 11-year veteran Jalen Rose in Jeffries' absence, and are holding try-outs to attempt to find other possible replacements.
Jeffries has career averages of 6.1 points and 4.9 rebounds and a 43.2 field goal percentage in 256 games.
