BANGKOK, Oct. 15 (UPI) -- Vania King beat homegrown Tamarine Tanasugarn in three sets Sunday to win the Bangkok Open tennis tournament.
To get her first title on the WTA Tour, the 17-year-old King, a native of Long Beach, Calif., won the match by scores of 2-6, 6-4, 6-4.
She won $30,500 for her efforts.
"I started slow; I was a bit tired from yesterday," King said. "In the first set, I was trying to come in, but she was hitting these low sharp angles. I just couldn't hurt her. She was playing great and coming up with these shots. I was standing too far back and in the second set, so I moved up the court and that helped a lot."
King had to hold on in the end because in the third set, Tanasugarn went ahead, 4-2, but could not sustain her momentum.
Tanasugarn was trying for her second career title.
