MADRID, Oct. 16 (UPI) -- Americans Mardy Fish and Robby Ginepri were first-round winners Monday at the Madrid Masters.

Both needed three sets to advance. Fish, who had to qualify for the tournament, beat Belgium's Xavier Malisse 5-7, 6-3, 7-5, while Ginepri defeated Spain's Feliciano Lopez, 6-1, 3-6, 6-3.

Next up for Fish is defending champion Rafael Nadal. The Spaniard is seeded second this week and earned a bye into the second round, as did the tournament's other 15 seeds.

Ginepri next faces Croatia's Mario Ancic, the 12th seed.

Swiss superstar Roger Federer is the top seed and will face Nicolas Massu in the second round. The Chilean advanced when Argentina's Gaston Gaudio retired with a stomach injury after the two had split the first two sets.
