Matteson soars in world golf rankings

PHILADELPHIA, Oct. 16 (UPI) -- Troy Matteson's first PGA Tour victory last week vaulted him 180 places in the latest world golf rankings in a new list released Monday.

Matteson, a tour rookie who won the Frys.com Open Sunday in Las Vegas, found himself at No. 142 in the world. The 26-year-old Florida native started the week without a tour victory and ranked 322.

There was no movement in golf's Top Five, with Tiger Woods holding on to the No. 1 spot followed by fellow Americans Jim Furyk and Phil Mickelson, Australian Adam Scott and Fiji's Vijay Singh.

Retief Goosen, who won the Volkswagen Masters for the second consecutive year, moved up one spot to No. 6 with follow South African Ernie Els dropping to seventh. England's Luke Donald is in eighth with Geoff Ogilvy, from Australia, taking ninth from Spain's Sergio Garcia, who remained No. 10.
