U. Miami suspends 3 players for brawl

MIAMI, Oct. 15 (UPI) -- University of Miami coach Larry Coker Sunday suspended three players for the melee at Saturday night's football game with Florida International.

Safety Brandon Meriweather, linebacker James Bryant and safety Anthony Reddick will sit for next week's Miami-Duke game, the Miami Herald reported.

The brawl broke out with nine minutes left in the third quarter as Miami walloped Florida International before 51,130 fans in the Orange Bowl. The final score was 35-0.

The fight began after Miami's H-back James Bryant scored on a 50-yard run, pointed at the opposition bench, and took a bow. Fists began flying on the extra point attempt.

Five Hurricanes players were among 13 players ejected from the game after the brawl emptied both benches.

"That's not college football," said Coker. "It's not what we represent at the University of Miami, and it will not be tolerated."
