OAKLAND, Calif., Oct. 12 (UPI) -- Hard-throwing reliever Joel Zumaya of Detroit is out indefinitely because of a sore right wrist and forearm.
The 22-year-old Zumaya, whose fast ball registers at least 100 mph, has been plagued by the ailments for much of the season.
Detroit Manager Jim Leyland withheld Zumaya in Wednesday's 8-5 win over Oakland in Game 2 of the American League Championship series because of the problems, and has not said when Zumaya will return.
"Joel Zumaya's forearm was a little tight and I chose not to use him tonight, and that's why you didn't see him," Leyland said after Wednesday night's victory.
"Even without Zumaya there, the bullpen is formidable," said Oakland Manager Ken Macha. "Not only do they have a good bullpen, but they've got depth. All the guys are good."
On Tuesday night, Zumaya's fast ball was clocked at 103 miles an hour.
He allowed one run and one hit in one inning.
