OAKLAND, Calif., Oct. 10 (UPI) -- Ivan Rodriguez and Brandon Inge hit home runs and Nate Robertson worked five scoreless innings Tuesday as Detroit beat Oakland 5-1 in Game 1 of the ALCS.
Robertson, 1-1 in the postseason, surrendered six hits and three walks with four strikeouts before giving way to relievers Fernando Rodney, Joel Zurnaya and Todd Jones.
The Athletics stranded 13 runners in scoring position while Barry Zito was hammered for five runs on seven hits in three and two-thirds innings. Zito fell to 1-1 in the postseason.
"You fall behind, they are good fastball hitters," said Oakland manager Ken Macha. "That's basically what happened."
Inge had three hits with two RBI and Curtis Gunderson had two hits for the Tigers, which have won four games in a row in the postseason. Detroit downed the Yankees in Game 4 of the American League Divisional Series Saturday.
Justin Verlander pitches for Detroit in Game 2 of the A.L. Championship Series Wednesday night while Estaban Loaiza takes the mound for Oakland.
