Torre returns for 12th season with Yankees

NEW YORK, Oct. 10 (UPI) -- Joe Torre on Tuesday announced that he would return for a 12th season as the manager of the New York Yankees.

Shortly after the Yankees were eliminated from the American League playoffs last week, rumors surfaced that Torre would be fired. And before he left New York Monday, team owner George Steinbrenner only offered a tepid "I haven't made up my mind yet" about who would lead the team next season.

But at a news conference Tuesday, Torre said Steinbrenner "gave me his support."

Torre said he talked with Steinbrenner for about 20 minutes Monday and covered a lot of ground, "what we do from here and things like that."

The Yankees haven't won a World Series since 2000 but have been successful, winning nine consecutive division championships and qualifying for the playoffs in each of Torre's previous 11 seasons.

Torre just completed his 11th season as the Yankees' manager, the longest uninterrupted tenure of any Yankee manager since Casey Stengel's 12-year run from 1949-60.

Torre owns a 1,079-699 record with the Yankees. His overall managerial mark with the Yankees, Mets, Braves and Cardinals is 1,973-1,702.
