
MOSCOW, Oct. 9 (UPI) -- Eighth-seeded and world No. 11 Nicole Vaidisova posted an easy victory Monday in the first round of the $1.34 million Kremlin Cup women's tennis tournament.
Vaidisova, from the Czech Republic, was a 6-3, 6-3 winner over Russian wild-card entrant Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova in her match. Another Russian wild-card, Elena Bovina, dropped a 6-0, 6-2 decision to Israel's Shahar Peer but two other Russian players claimed victories Monday.
Vera Zvonareva, another wild-card entrant, was a 6-3, 6-2 winner over Russia's Vera Dushevina and Elena Likhovtseva was a 6-0, 6-1 winner over Italy's Maria Elena Camerin.
The Kremlin Cup field includes world No. 1 Amelie Mauresmo, from France, and several Russia stars, including Maria Sharapova and Svetlana Kuznetsova.
The tournament champion will win $196,900.
