Umpires selected for baseball playoffs

NEW YORK, Oct. 9 (UPI) -- Jerry Crawford and Tim Welke will head the umpiring crews for the American and National League Championship Series, Major League Baseball announced Monday.

Crawford will be the crew chief for the ALCS between the Detroit Tigers and Oakland Athletics, which begins Tuesday. It will mark the 12th LCS for the 30- year veteran, who has also worked five World Series and four Division Series.

Joining Crawford in the ALCS will be Hunter Wendelstedt, Derryl Cousins, Chuck Meriwether, Gary Cederstrom and Mike Reilly. This will be Reilly's 16th postseason series.

Welke will head the crew for the NLCS between the New York Mets and St. Louis Cardinals, which begins Wednesday at Shea Stadium. This will be the sixth LCS for the 23-year veteran, who has also worked five Division Series and three World Series.

The other NLCS umpires will be Jim Joyce, Jerry Layne, Fieldin Culbreth, Jeff Kellogg and Gary Darling.
