Bills lineman McCargo has fractured foot

ORCHARD PARK, N.Y., Oct. 9 (UPI) -- Buffalo Bills rookie defensive tackle John McCargo suffered a foot fracture in Sunday's loss to Chicago and is scheduled to have surgery.

A screw will be placed in McCargo's foot to help the fracture heal faster.

McCargo, the second of Buffalo's two first-round draft picks, was hurt late in the fourth quarter of Sunday's game.

The Bills traded up on draft day to grab the North Carolina State product, who manned a collegiate defensive line that included fellow draftees Mario Williams and Manny Lawson.

McCargo has six tackles in five games this season. He had two tackles on Sunday.


Umpires selected for baseball playoffs

NEW YORK, Oct. 9 (UPI) -- Jerry Crawford and Tim Welke will head the umpiring crews for the American and National League Championship Series, Major League Baseball announced Monday.

Crawford will be the crew chief for the ALCS between the Detroit Tigers and Oakland Athletics, which begins Tuesday. It will mark the 12th LCS for the 30- year veteran, who has also worked five World Series and four Division Series.

Joining Crawford in the ALCS will be Hunter Wendelstedt, Derryl Cousins, Chuck Meriwether, Gary Cederstrom and Mike Reilly. This will be Reilly's 16th postseason series.

Welke will head the crew for the NLCS between the New York Mets and St. Louis Cardinals, which begins Wednesday at Shea Stadium. This will be the sixth LCS for the 23-year veteran, who has also worked five Division Series and three World Series.

The other NLCS umpires will be Jim Joyce, Jerry Layne, Fieldin Culbreth, Jeff Kellogg and Gary Darling.


Gonzalez moves into second round in Vienna

VIENNA, Oct. 9 (UPI) -- Fifth-seeded Chilean Fernando Gonzalez was among Monday's first-round winners at the BA-CA Tennis Trophy tournament in Vienna.

Gonzalez got past Frenchman Gilles Simon 7-6 (8-6), 6-4 in his first action since he suffered a third-round loss at the U.S. Open last month.

Austrian Oliver Marach beat fellow countryman Rainer Eitzinger 2-6, 7-5, 7-6 (8-6).

In other action, German Florian Mayer mauled Italian Alessio Di Mauro 6-2, 6-0; Swiss Stanislas Wawrinka beat Croatian Marin Cilic 6-4, 6-1; and Slovak Dominik Hrbaty beat Italian Simone Bolelli 6-2, 6-4.

British soccer player admits mooning

MANCHESTER, England, Oct. 9 (UPI) -- A Manchester City midfielder has admitted bringing British soccer "into disrepute" by mooning Everton, England fans during a match.

The Football Association said Joey Barton requested a hearing, which was set for Oct. 10, Sky News report Barton dropped his shorts twice Sept. 30, showing his rear end to Everton fans who had been heckling him.

"Barton has admitted a charge of improper conduct and/or bringing the game into disrepute and requested a personal hearing," the association said in a statement.

Manchester City team spokesman Paul Tyrell said the governing body should keep in mind Barton acted "without any malice and in a light-hearted manner."


Berdych first-round winner in Stockholm

STOCKHOLM, Sweden, Oct. 9 (UPI) -- Third-seeded Czech Tomas Berdych highlighted Monday's first-round winners at the Stockholm Open as he defeated German Bjorn Phau 6-3, 6-2.

Three other seeds advanced, as No. 4 Spaniard David Ferrer beat Italian Andreas Seppi 6-1, 6-4; No. 6 Belgian Olivier Rochus beat American Vincent Spadea 6-3, 6-4; and No. 8 Swede Robin Soderling beat Belgian Christophe Rochus 6-1, 6-2.

Soderling reached the Stockholm Open final in 2003 before losing to American Mardy Fish.

This week's top seeds are world No. 2 French Open champion Rafael Nadal of Spain and American James Blake.
