PITTSBURGH, Oct. 5 (UPI) -- Pittsburgh goaltender Marc-Andre Fleury started the season with 40 saves and a shutout Thursday night in a 4-0 win over the Philadelphia Flyers.

It was the third career shutout for Fleury.

Scoring machine Sidney Crosby and Michel Ouellet each had a goal and an assist, while Jarkko Ruutu, Dominic Moore, Nils Ekman, Robert Scuderi and Colby Armstrong all assisted once for the Penguins (1


0), had the worst record in the Eastern Conference last season and finished with just 58 points overall.

With 39 goals and 102 points, Crosby finished second in Calder Trophy voting last season to Washington right wing Alexander Ovechkin of Washington. He was the top overall pick in the 2005 NHL entry draft.

Fleury, the top overall pick in 2003, needed a good start after winning just 13 games last season.

Robert Esche allowed four goals on 21 shots for the Flyers (0-1-0), who went 0-for-10 on power play chances.
