MILWAUKEE, Oct. 6 (UPI) -- The Milwaukee Brewers Friday picked up the 2007 contract option on right-hander Francisco Cordero.

The 29-year-old Cordero was acquired July 28 in a six-player trade with the Texas Rangers.

His 16 consecutive saves for Milwaukee is the fifth-highest total on the franchise's all-time list.

"Francisco did a great job for us and pitched like the all-star closer he was in 2004," Brewers General Manager Doug Melvin said in a statement on the team's Web site. "The club had a lot of confidence in him and it is nice knowing that we have someone of his ability for the closer role next year."

The Brewers will pay Cordero a reported $5.4 million next year.

In 400 career appearances, Cordero has a 3.33 ERA and 133 saves.

Derrick Turnbow, who began the 2006 season as Milwaukee's closer, will be the main set-up man in the bullpen.
