
SAN DIEGO, Oct. 5 (UPI) -- Five pitchers combined on a four-hit shutout Thursday afternoon as St. Louis beat San Diego, 2-0, in Game 2 of their NL Division Series.
The Cardinals have a 2-0 lead in the best-of-five series, with Games 3 and 4 scheduled for Saturday and Sunday in St. Louis.
Albert Pujols and Jim Edmonds hit RBI singles in the top of the fourth inning while Jeff Weaver, Randy Flores, Josh Kinney and Adam Wainwright shut down San Diego's offense.
In 18 innings, the Padres have been held to one run and 10 hits by Cardinals' pitchers, who labored most of the regular season.
Pujols had three hits and Juan Encarnacion had two hits for the Cardinals.
Weaver (1-0) was the winner and Wainwright earned a save.
Four players each had one hit for the Padres, who have lost eight straight divisional series games to the Cardinals since 1996.
