Congressional inquiry list adds NCAA

WASHINGTON, Oct. 5 (UPI) -- U.S. House Ways and Means Chairman Bill Thomas, R-Calif., has expanded his inquiry into tax-exempt institutions to include U.S. college sports.

Thomas asked NCAA President Myles Brand in a letter to answer a series of questions about his group's annual revenue, spending per student athlete and educational mission.

The Hill, a Washington newspaper, reported that while acknowledging the importance of tax breaks for educational groups, Thomas questioned the NCAA tax-free status, "particularly in the context of major college football and men's basketball programs."
