NHL: Buffalo 3, Carolina 2 (SO)

RALEIGH, N.C., Oct. 4 (UPI) -- Daniel Briere scored a shoot-out goal Wednesday night as the Buffalo Sabres beat Carolina, 3-2, in the season opener for the National Hockey League.

Jason Pominville and Chris Drury scored goals in regulation; Dmitri Kalinin, Teppo Numminen, Derek Roy and Henrik Tallinder had one assist each; and Ryan Miller made 32 saves on the 34 shits he faced for the Sabres (1


0).

Eric Staal and Erik Cole scored goals; Ray Whitney had two assists; Cam Ward and Henrik Tallinder had one assist each; and Cam Ward made 30 saves on 32 shots for the Hurricanes (0-1-0).

On the power play, Buffalo was 0-for-9, and Carolina went 1-for-9.

The Sabres lost Carolina in seven games in last season's Eastern Conference Final.
