COLUMBUS, Ohio, Oct. 1 (UPI) -- The Columbus Crew were eliminated from Major League Soccer playoff contention despite beating FC Dallas 3-1 at Crew Stadium.

Joseph Ngwenya, Jacob Thomas and Jason Garey scored goals Saturday night, but the team's win was soured by news the New York Red Bulls defeated the Chicago Fire at Giants Stadium, eliminating the Crew from playoff contention.

The Crew learned about the Red Bulls victory just after halftime. The game in Columbus started about 40 minutes late because of a downpour.

Columbus will miss the playoffs for the second straight year. Dallas had already clinched a playoff spot.
