MLB: Kansas City 9, Detroit 6

DETROIT, Sept. 30 (UPI) -- Mike Sweeney drove in three runs Saturday night as Kansas City beat the Detroit Tigers, 9-6.

On of his three hits was a solo homer in a seven-run first inning.

David DeJesus and Joey Gathright both had two RBI; DeJesus had two runs and two hits; Gathright had a run and three hits; Jeff Keppinger had one run, two hits, and one RBI; and Paul Phillips had two runs and two hits for the Royals (61-100).

The winner was Todd Wellemeyer (1-2).

Jimmy Gobble earned his second save.

Matt Stairs had two hits and two RBI; Placido Polanco, Magglio Ordonez, and Carlos Guillen each had one RBI; a run scored on an error by Estaban German; Sean Casey had a run and two hits; while both Polanco and Ordonez had two hits for the Tigers (95-66), who have a four-game losing streak.

The loser was Zach Miner (7-6).
