Two others charged in Duquesne shooting

PITTSBURGH, Sept. 29 (UPI) -- Allegheny County, Pa., prosecutors dropped charges against one person but charged two others in the shooting of five Duquesne University basketball players.

District Attorney Stephen A. Zappala Jr. said Brandon Baynes was released after a witness who identified him as the shooter recanted her testimony, The Pittsburgh Tribune-Review reported Friday.

William Holmes remained in jail on charges of attempted homicide, aggravated assault, firearms violations and conspiracy. Derek Lee was charged Thursday with the same crimes and Erica Renee Sager was accused of instigating the incident.

"It became apparent that Baynes could not have been a gunman," Zappala told the Tribune-Review. However, he said, "several witnesses identified Holmes' involvement."

Baynes' lawyer said her client, a long-time friend of Lee's, was cooperating with investigators.

The shooting took place outside a dance at the university. Two gunmen reportedly fired on the basketball players after an argument. One of the players, Sam Ashaolu, remained hospitalized Thursday.
