Ljubicic moves into Thailand Open semis

BANGKOK, Sept. 29 (UPI) -- Top-seeded Ivan Ljubicic rallied from a set down Friday to claim a quarterfinal victory in the $550,000 Thailand Open.

Ljubicic, from Croatia, dropped the first set to American Robby Ginepri 4-6, but came back with 6-3, 6-4 set wins to claim a spot in Saturday's semifinals. He will meet Bangkok native Paradorn Srichaphan in the semifinals, after the local favorite ousted Britain's Tim Henman 6-7 (2-7), 6-4, 7-6 (7-4).

Saturday's other semifinal sends third-seeded American James Blake against Russia's Marat Safin. Blake beat Safin last Sunday in the last match of the Russia-U.S. Davis Cup semifinal, although Russia had already locked up the team victory.

Friday, Blake was a 6-2, 2-6, 7-5 winner over fifth-seeded Finn Jarkko Nieminen while Safin stopped Germany's Mischa Zverev 7-6 (7-4), 5-7, 7-5.

The semifinals' winners move into Sunday championship match, with first place worth $76,500.
