Woods leads at World Golf Championships

CHANDLER'S CROSS, England, Sept. 28 (UPI) -- Tiger Woods shot an 8-under-par 63 Thursday to take the first-round lead in the World Golf Championships in England.

Woods, the defending champion in the event, drained a 20-foot eagle putt on the 18th hole to grab a 1-stroke lead over Padraig Harrington and Ian Poulter. Stewart Cink and Ernie Els are tied for fourth at 6-under-par 65 while Jyoti Randhawa and David Howell are in sixth after shooting 66s.

Woods posted birdies on the second, third and fifth holes to establish his pace and wrapped up the front nine with birdies on seven, eight and nine. After five consecutive pars, Woods birdied No. 15 and finished his round by hitting a 3-wood 270 yards to within 20 feet on 18. He made the putt for eagle 3.

"I hit two good shots on 18 and I gave myself a chance at a three and somehow it found the bottom," said Woods of his putt on 18. "That was about as far as my 3-wood was going, especially into the wind. I absolutely tattooed that one, which was nice."
