Chakvetadze an early round winner in China

GUANGZHOU, China, Sept. 27 (UPI) -- Russian Anna Chakvetadze and Spain's Anabel Medina Garrigues claimed victories Wednesday in the $175,000 Guangzhou International Women's Open.

Medina Garrigues, seeded fourth, defeated China's Jing Ren, 6-0, 6-1 and fifth-seeded Spaniard Lourdes Dominquez Lino was upset by Australia's Alicia Molik 7-6 (7-3), 6-0 in second-round matches with the winners moving into the tournament's quarterfinals.

The rest of Wednesday's play at Guangzhou were first-round matches and included Chakvetadze, the tournament's third seed, stopping Chinese wild card entry Shuai Zhang 3-6, 7-5, 6-0.

Also, Russian Elena Vesnina beat Estonia's Kaia Kanepi, 6-1, 3-6, 6-1 and Russia's Olga Poutchkova toppled defending Guangzhou champion Zi Yan 2-6, 6-3, 6-3.

The tournament finals are set for Sunday with the winner claiming $28,000.
