
ST. LOUIS, Sept. 25 (UPI) -- Mike Piazza singled home the go-ahead run in the seventh inning Monday night as the San Diego Padres edged the St. Louis Cardinals, 6-5.
The Padres moved two games ahead of the Los Angeles Dodgers, who were idle Monday, in the NL West.
St. Louis, which suffered its sixth straight defeat, holds a 2 1/2 game lead over Houston for first place in the National League Central. The Astros edged Philadelphia, 5-4, Monday.
Brian Giles was 2-for-3 with three RBI and scored once for the Padres, who won their fifth straight.
Rookie Mike Thompson filled in for David Wells, who missed the game due to gout in his right foot. Thompson allowed five runs -- four earned -- on eight hits with one strikeout in 3 1/3 innings.
Scott Cassidy (6-4) got the win after striking out three batters in the sixth.
Chris Duncan and Jim Edmonds homered for the Cardinals.
