DOVER, Del., Sept. 24 (UPI) -- Jeff Burton Sunday captured the checkered flag to win the Dover 400 Nextel Cup race at the Dover (Del.) International Speedway.
Burton's No.31 Richard Childress Racing Chevrolet crossed the finish line 7.955 seconds ahead of Carl Edwards.
It was Burton's first win of the season and the 18th of his Nextel Cup career.
"I want to thank Richard (Childress) for believing in me," Burton said. "I felt like if we just kept putting ourselves in position we would have a chance and we've been doing a good job of that this year."
Jeff Gordon was third, Kurt Busch was fourth and Greg Biffle finished fifth.
In spots 6-10 were Martin Truex Jr., Bobby Labonte, Clint Bowyer, Denny Hamlin and Matt Kenseth.
The win put Burton at top of the standings, six points ahead of Gordon (5,351-5,346).
Kenseth, despite falling to 10th place in the race, is only 18 points behind the leader.
