Hingis makes Sunfeast Open quarters

CALCUTTA, India, Sept. 22 (UPI) -- Martina Hingis and Sania Mirza both won their quarterfinal matches Friday at the Sunfeast Open Tennis Tournament in Calcutta, India.

Hingis, a former No. 1 player in the world and the top seed in this tournament, beat unseeded Tamarine Tanasugarn of Thailand, 7-5, 6-2.

Mirza, who is the fifth seed and is playing before a native and noisy crowd, beat No. 4 seed Aravane Rezai of France, 6-4, 7-5.

Also on Friday, Olga Poutchkova of Russia topped Alberta Brianti of Italy, 7-5, 6-3; and qualifier Iroda Tulyaganova of Uzbekistan beat Russia's Alla Kudryavtseva, 4-6, 6-2, 6-2.

In the semifinals on Saturday, Mirza faces Hingis; and Poutchkova will play Tulyaganova.

Hingis, a five-time Grand Slam champion, beat Mirza in straight sets in Dubai earlier this season.

The winner of Sunday's title match will pocket a first prize check of $28,000.
