Garbin advances to quarters in Slovenia

PORTOROZ, Slovenia, Sept. 22 (UPI) -- Tathiana Garbin of Italy Friday beat Germany's Martina Muller in straight sets in the quarterfinals of the Slovenia Open Tennis Tournament in Portoroz.

Garbin, the eighth seed, won the match over No. 4 seed Muller by scores of 6-2, 7-5.

In other quarterfinals, sixth-seeded Maria Elena Camerin of Italy was a 7-5, 5-7, 6-1 winner against unseeded Martina Sucha of Slovakia; seventh-seeded Emilie Loit of France ousted No. 9 seed Jarmila Gajdosova of Slovakia, 6-3, 6-3; and 15-year-old qualifier Tamira Paszek of Austria beat wild-card entry Andreja Klepac of Slovenia, 6-4, 6-2.

"She played really well," Paszek said. "We had some tough exchanges, and it was a great match. It was a tough match for the mind, too, because I was against the crowd and not only my opponent."

In Saturday's semifinals, Garbin will meet Camerin and Loit faces Paszek.
