Top-seeded Srebotnik upset in Slovenia

PORTOROZ, Slovenia, Sept. 19 (UPI) -- Unseeded Slovakian Martina Sucha knocked off top-seeded Slovenian crowd favorite Katarina Srebotnik Tuesday at the Slovenia Open.

Sucha defeated 2005 Portoroz runner-up Srebotnik 4-6, 6-4, 6-4.

Srebotnik lost to Czech Klara Zakopalova in last year's finale.

Zakopalova lost Tuesday to eighth-seeded Italian Tathiana Garbin 6-3, 7-5.

Five other seeds advanced, as No. 4 German Martina Muller beat Italian Karin Knapp 6-7 (6-8), 6-2, 7-6 (8-6); No. 5 Italian Romina Oprandi beat German Julia Schruff 6-3, 7-5; No. 6 Italian Maria Elena Camerin defeated Croat Ivana Lisjak 6-1, 7-6 (7-0); No. 7 Frenchwoman Emilie Loit beat Slovenian Masa Zec Peskiric 6-1, 4-6, 6-4; and No 9 Slovak Jarmila Gajdosova defeated Czech Eva Birnerova 6-3, 6-1.
