NORMAN, Okla., Sept. 19 (UPI) -- University of Oklahoma head football coach Bob Stoops questioned the severity of a penalty given to officials who altered the outcome of a game.
Stoops questions whether the one-game suspensions given by the Pac-10 Conference to the officiating crew and instant replay operators was a severe enough punishment after two controversial decisions gave a 34-33 victory to Oregon, The Oklahoman reported Tuesday.
"At least they have reacted to it and tried," said Stoops. "Truly, there can be no amends to it, and it can't be corrected. I've made a million mistakes. I'll make a million more. In each game and in that game included, I wish there were things I could have done differently or changed.
"Unlike officials, players and coaches don't have that opportunity (to correct mistakes). They had an opportunity to get it right, and they chose not to."
Pac-10 Commissioner Tom Hansen said in a statement that tapes of the game had confirmed accusations by OU officials that errors had been made by the game officials, giving Oregon possession of an onside kick and upholding a pass interference penalty.
