MLB: Boston 6, NY Yankees 3 (Game 1)

NEW YORK, Sept. 17 (UPI) -- Kevin Youkilis doubled home three runs in the seventh inning Sunday as Boston posted a 6-3 win over the New York Yankees in the opener of a day/night twin bill.

The teams also played a day/night doubleheader Saturday to make up a June 7 rainout. The teams were forced into a second doubleheader because Friday's series opener was rained out.

David Ortiz and David Murphy both homered for the Red Sox. The win ensured that Boston won't mathematically be eliminated from the division race this weekend. Brian Corey (2-1) got the win in relief while Ron Vollone (3-3) took the loss for the Yankees.

Johnny Damon had two hits and scored twice for the Yankees, who could have clinched the AL East with two wins Sunday and a Toronto loss. The Blue Jays beat Tampa Bay on Sunday.
