Pavano had passenger during crash

WEST PALM BEACH, Fla., Sept. 15 (UPI) -- Yankee pitcher Carl Pavano had a young woman passenger when he was involved in a Florida crash, but she left the scene before police arrived.

Ernest DeLaura, the driver whose dump truck was hit by Pavano's Porsche, told the New York Daily News he thought Pavano and Gia Allemand were dead when he first surveyed the scene. DeLaura said the Solid Waste Authority of West Palm Beach got Allemand's name, but a friend then arrived and drove her away. As a result, her name did not appear in the police report.

Pavano, who was in Florida recuperating from previous injuries, broke two ribs in the Aug. 15 crash. He angered the Yankees by not reporting the crash or his new injuries for 11 days.

Allemand is a model and winner of a number of beauty queen titles, including Miss Italia and Miss South Beach, the Daily News said.
