Ljubicic makes Beijing quarterfinals

BEIJING, Sept. 14 (UPI) -- Top seed Ivan Ljubicic of Croatia led second-round winners at the China Open in Beijing.

He beat Kevin Kim of the United States, 6-3, 6-4 to advance to a quarterfinal match Friday against eighth-seeded Hyung-Taik Lee of South Korea. Lee beat Michael Berrer of Germany, 4-6, 7-6 (7-4), 7-6 (7-4).

Elsewhere, No. 2 Nikolay Davydenko of Russia topped Luka Gregorc of Slovenia, 7-6 (7-2), 6-2; and sixth-seeded Paradorn Srichaphan of Thailand beat Japan's Satoshi Iwabuchi, 6-3, 6-1.

Other matches Friday pit Davydenko, who was a semifinalist at the U.S. Open last week, against Srichaphan; third seed Marcos Baghdatis of Cyprus against unseeded Danai Udomchoke of Thailand; and Croatia's Mario Ancic against No. 5 seed Dominik Hrbaty of Slovakia.

The tournament's winner will receive $69,200. The finals are scheduled for Sunday.
