BALI, Indonesia, Sept. 12 (UPI) -- Defending champion and third-seeded Lindsay Davenport of the United States beat Russian Galina Voskoboeva, 7-5, 6-1, at the Wismilak International.
The former world No. 1 Davenport, who beat Italian Francesca Schiavone in last year's Wismilak final, will play Japan's Akiko Morigami in the round of 16.
There were a pair of upsets as Russian Olga Poutchkova beat fourth-seeded Serb Ana Ivanovic 6-3, 4-6, 6-2, and Hungarian Melinda Czink beat fifth-seeded Slovak Daniela Hantuchova 7-5, 6-2.
In other seeded play, No. 6 Marion Bartoli of France beat Indonesian Ayu Fani Damayanti 6-1, 6-0, No. 8 Severine Bremond of France beat Australian Trudi Musgrave 6-2, 6-2, and No. 9 Japanese Aiko Nakamura beat Thai Suchanan Viratprasert 7-6 (7-2), 6-4.
