Vikings' Asher Allen retires at age 24

WASHINGTON, Sept. 11 (UPI) -- Ryan Longwell's 31-yard field goal with a minute remaining Monday gave Minnesota and new Coach Brad Childress a 19-16 win over the Washington Redskins.
Washington's John Hall was wide left on a 48-yard field goal attempt with 12 seconds remaining.
Longwell, who kicked for Green Bay the first nine seasons of his career before being signed by the Vikings as a free agent in March, had missed a 54-yard try in the opening minute of the fourth quarter.
Brad Johnson completed 16-of-30 passes for 223 yards with a touchdown for the Vikings (1-0), while Chester Taylor rushed for 88 yards and a touchdown.
Mark Brunell was limited to 163 yards passing on 17-of-28 attempts for Washington (0-1).
