MLB: San Diego 5, Colorado 4

SAN DIEGO, Sept. 6 (UPI) -- San Diego defeated Colorado 5-4 Tuesday, and the Padres extended their lead in the NL wild card race to two games over Philadelphia.

San Diego also pulled within one game of the Dodgers for first place in the NL West.

Mike Piazza homered for the Padres, and Josh Barfield and Russell Branyan each had a pair of hits.

Pitcher Cla Meredith extended his scoreless streak to 27 1/3 innings for his fourth victory.

Garrett Atkins and Yorvit Torrealba homered for the Rockies; Ryan Spilborghs went 3-for-4.

Rockies left-hander Jeff Francis allowed five runs on 10 hits with two walks and three strikeouts in five-plus innings.
