Woods edges Singh for fifth straight win

NORTON, Mass., Sept. 4 (UPI) -- Tiger Woods overcame a three-shot deficit to win the Deutsche Bank Championship in Norton, Mass., Monday, extending his current winning streak to five.

Woods posted 8-under 63 in the final round for a total 16-under 268 and his third win in three weeks. Vijay Singh, who set the course record with a 61 on Saturday, closed with a 3-under 68 to finish two shots back, at 14-under 270.

Woods moved ahead of third-round leader Singh with two eagles and two birdies while shooting 30 on the front nine. That gave him three stroke lead at the turn -- a six-shot swing in nine holes.

Woods has come from behind to win in consecutive weeks. He shook off a bad Saturday last week at the Bridgestone Invitational and came from one down to beat Stewart Cink in a Sunday playoff.

Prior to that, Woods won the Buick Open, the British Open and the PGA Championship after missing the U.S. Open cut in June, one month following the death of his father, Earl.

Woods now has 53 career wins, surpassing Byron Nelson for fifth all time. He has seven wins this season.

Chargers' Foley shot, out for season

SAN DIEGO, Sept. 4 (UPI) -- San Diego linebacker Steve Foley will miss the entire 2006 season after he was shot following a traffic stop.

Foley was shot early Sunday morning by an off-duty police officer near his home in the Coronado, Calif.

The Chargers placed the hospitalized Foley on the non-football injured reserve list.

"Our concern right now is for Steve's overall health and well-being," said Chargers General Manager A.J. Smith. "Steve's health needs to be his No. 1 priority. Football is secondary right now. Steve needs to focus on his recovery."

According to the San Diego Union-Tribune, Lt. Dennis Brugos shot Foley three times after pulling over the player early Sunday morning. Foley's car reportedly almost hit several vehicles while weaving in and out of traffic in speeds ranging from 30 to 90 miles per hour.

Foley has also been accused of resisting arrest, battery on a police officer and being drunk in public.

Nadal, who defeated world No. 1 Roger Federer in June's French Open final but lost to the Swiss in the Wimbledon final in July, is 52-7 overall this season, including five championships.

Nadal's quarterfinal opponent will be unseeded Russian Mikhail Youzhny, who beat sixth-seeded Spaniard Tommy Robredo 6-2, 6-0, 6-1.

The ninth-seeded Roddick, 24, defeated German qualifier Benjamin Becker 6-3, 6-4, 6-3 just one day after the Becker beat Andre Agassi.

Henin-Hardenne, Davenport in Open quarters

FLUSHING MEADOW, N.Y., Sept. 4 (UPI) -- Former champions and former world No. 1s Justine Henin-Hardenne and Lindsay Davenport were a pair of fourth-round winners Monday at the U.S. Open.

They will meet in the quarterfinals at the year's final Grand Slam event.

The second-seeded Henin-Hardenne, 24, reached her first quarterfinal here in three years, as she beat Israeli Shahar Peer 6-1, 6-0 in 51 minutes.

The five-time Grand Slam champion Henin-Hardenne is seeking a trip to her fourth major final this year, as she beat Svetlana Kuznetsova in the French Open finale and lost to Amelie Mauresmo in the Wimbledon and Australian Open finals.

The 10th-seeded Davenport defeated seventh-seeded Swiss lefthander Patty Schnyder 6-4, 6-4.

Another former U.S. Open champion, sixth-seeded Svetlana Kuznetsova lost to Serbian Jelena Jankovic, 6-7 (5-7), 6-3, 6-2.

Clemson LB Waters tears knee ligament

CLEMSON, S.C., Sept. 4 (UPI) -- Anthony Waters, who returned to Clemson in South Carolina as a fifth-year senior, ended his college football career when he tore a knee ligament.

Waters undergoes reconstructive knee surgery soon. The injury and operation will put him out of action for the rest of the season.

"This is certainly a major loss for our football team," head coach Tommy Bowden said. "We have now lost two starting linebackers. Anthony is a terrific player. I am confident we will have players who will respond."

The Tigers, ranked 18th nationally, play Boston College next week.
