FLUSHING MEADOWS, N.Y., Sept. 3 (UPI) -- Top seed Roger Federer and second-seeded Rafael Nadal won their matches Sunday at the U.S. Open in Flushing Meadows, N.Y.
Federer ousted American Vincent Spadea, 6-3, 6-3, 6-0, in a second-round match, while Nadal advanced to the fourth round with 6-4, 7-6 (7-5), 7-6 (7-4), victory over South African Wesley Moodie.
No. 4 David Nalbandian was upset by unseeded Russian Marat Safin, 6-3, 7-3, 6-2, 3-6, 7-6 (8-6). Sixth-seeded Spaniard Tommy Robredo beat Swiss Stanislas Wawrinka, 6-3, 6-4, 6-2.
No. 9 Andy Roddick of the United States beat Spain's Fernando Verdasco, 6-7 (5-7), 6-3, 6-4, 6-7 (4-7), 6-2.
The day also featured the retirement of American Andre Agassi, who lost his third-round match to unseeded German Benjamin Becker, 7-5, 6-7 (4-7), 6-4, 7-5.
Twelfth-seeded Tomas Berdych eliminated No. 23 Dmitry Tursunov; No. 15 Lleyton Hewitt ousted No. 20 Novak Djokovic; and 17th-seeded Andy Murray beat No. 10 Fernando Gonzalez. No. 25 Richard Gasquet eliminated Marco Chiudinelli.
In a minor upset, Russian Mikhail Youzhny ousted 11th-seeded David Ferrer of Spain.
