Vikings' Asher Allen retires at age 24

WASHINGTON, Sept. 2 (UPI) -- Ryan Zimmerman walked with the bases loaded in the bottom of the 11th inning Saturday afternoon as Washington edged Arizona, 7-6.
Alfonso Soriano hit a two-run homer in the bottom of the ninth, giving him a single-season Nationals franchise record 44 homers. Ryan Church hit a three-run homer, and Bernie Castro had one RBI for the Nationals (57-77), who have won their last two games.
The winner was closer Chad Cordero (6-4).
Chris B. Young had three hits and five RBI, and Carlos Quentin hit a solo homer for the Diamondbacks (64-70).
The losing pitcher was Brandon Lyon (2-4).
The contest was the opener of a day/night doubleheader.
