ST. LOUIS, Sept. 1 (UPI) -- The St. Louis Rams Friday signed 10-year veteran running back Stephen Davis to a one-year contract to back up Steven Jackson.

Davis, a three-time Pro-Bowler, spent the last three seasons with the Carolina Panthers after seven seasons with the Washington Redskins.

He ran for a team record 1,444 yards with eight touchdowns in 2003 when the Panthers reached the Super Bowl, but has been hobbled by knee problems the past two seasons.

Terms of his contract were not released, but the St. Louis Post-Dispatch said the pact was for one year for the veteran's minimum of $810,000.

The Rams cut 13 players Friday, including running back John David Washington, son of actor Denzel Washington.
