FLUSHING MEADOWS, N.Y., Sept. 1 (UPI) -- Andre Agassi outlasted upstart Marcos Baghdatis, 6-4, 6-4, 3-6, 5-7, 7-5, in a marathon second-round match at the U.S. Open in Flushing Meadows, N.Y.
The Thursday match lasted into Friday morning, when the unseeded 36-year-old American finally put away the eighth-seeded 21-year-old Cypriot.
In other second-round action Thursday, reigning two-time French Open champion Rafael Nadal of Spain was a 6-4, 4-6, 6-4, 6-2, winner over Peruvian Luis Horna.
No. 6 Tommy Robredo of Spain beat Korean Hyung-Taik Lee, 3-6, 6-3, 6-4, 6-1, and 11th seeded Spaniard David Ferrer beat American Justin Gimelstob, 6-2, 6-4, 6-1.
Former U.S. Open winner Lleyton Hewitt, the 15th seed, advanced to the third round with a 6-4, 6-2, 6-2, win over Czech Jan Hernych.
