HOUSTON, Aug. 31 (UPI) -- Right-hander Brandon Backe of Houston will not pitch again this season as he will undergo elbow surgery next Thursday in Birmingham, Ala.
The surgery will be performed by sports surgeon Dr. James Andrews, the Astros said on their Web site.
During the "Tommy John" surgery, an elbow ligament is replaced with a tendon from elsewhere in the body -- the forearm, hamstring or foot of the patient.
Backe said he decided to have the surgery rather than take a chance on the condition recurring after a long rehab.
"We talked about it and decided that I gave it a shot to try to heal on its own," Backe said. "It seemed like it worked for a little bit, but obviously it didn't work in the long run."
Normally, it takes 12 months of rehabilitation to recover from the procedure.
Backe was placed on the 15-day disabled list Aug. 19.
In 43 innings this season, Backe was 3-2 with an ERA of 3.77, 18 walks and 19 strikeouts.
