
PHOENIX, Aug. 30 (UPI) -- Mike Thompson allowed a run and four hits in 5 1/3 innings Wednesday afternoon as San Diego beat Arizona, 4-1.
The Padres won twice in the three-game series and have six wins in their last 10 games.
Both Mike Piazza and Dave Roberts knocked in two runs; Roberts had a run and four hits; Josh Barfield had two runs and one hit; and Piazza had two hits for the Padres (68-65).
Thompson (4-5), who won for the first time since June 20, had one walk and no strikeouts.
Trevor Hoffman earned his 35th save.
Chris Young hit an RBI ground-out, and five other players each had one hit for the Diamondbacks (64-69), who have seven losses in their last 10 games.
In five innings, loser Claudio Vargas (10-9) surrendered three runs and six hits with three walks and three strikeouts.
