OAKLAND, Calif., Aug. 30 (UPI) -- Oakland edged Boston 2-1 Tuesday, and the slumping Red Sox fell further out of playoff contention.
Boston is now 6 1/2 games behind Chicago in the wild card standings and 7 1/2 in back of the AL East-leading Yankees.
Eric Chavez doubled in Frank Thomas in the fourth, and Marco Scutaro scored on Mark Ellis' sacrifice fly in the fifth for Oakland, which has won for the eighth time in 10 games and is now 7 1/2 games ahead of the Angels for first place in the AL West.
Kirk Saarloos threw 6 1/3 innings for the Athletics.
Boston's Josh Beckett threw seven strong innings, but lost for the fourth time in five games.
The Red Sox played again without the services of their sluggers. David Ortiz returned to Boston Monday night and was admitted to Massachusetts General Hospital where he will undergo further evaluation for an irregular heartbeat.
Manny Ramirez missed his third straight game with a sore right knee and Wily Mo Pena sat out with a sore left wrist. They were also sent back to Boston for medical tests.
